Abstract

569,430. Wearing-apparel. BRITISH CELANESE, Ltd. Nov. 17, 1943, No. 19176. Convention date, Nov. 18, 1942. [Class 141] [Also in Group VIII] A flexible buoyant lining for wearing apparel such as jackets or coats comprises at least two flexible films or foils having a basis of an organic derivative of cellulose united so that there is a plurality of discrete air spaces between adjacent films or foils. A foil 7 having a number of uniformly spaced circular or polygonal raised areas 8 may be united by an adhesive, a solvent, or by heat and pressure to a plain foil or to a foil with similarly spaced depressed areas which may be in or out of register with the raised areas of the foil 7. Alternatively, a corrugated foil may be united to a plain foil or to another corrugated foil, with the corrugations in alignment, and the air sealed within the corrugations by crimping and sealing the compound sheet around the edges. The lining may replace the ordinary textile lining or may be placed between the outer fabric and the fabric lining. The lining may be permanently attached by sewing, stapling, by applying heat and pressure, and, if desired, solvents or softeners, at selected areas to soften the material of the foils, or temporarily by means of ties or snap fasteners. The foils may be of cellulose acetate, propionate, butyrate, acetate-propionate, acetate - butyrate, acetate - sterate, ethyl cellulose, or benzyl cellulose, and may contain a plasticizer such as triacetin, tripropionin, triethylene glycol, ethyl phthelyl ethyl glycollate, dibutyl phthalate or tartrate, triphenyl or tricresyl phosphate or monoethylp-toluene sulphonamide. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 describes also linings made from foils of polyvinyl chloride or acetate, copolymers of vinyl chloride and vinyl acetate, polystyrene, polymethyl methacrylate, and synthetic linear polyamide condensation products, and composite linings comprising short lengths of tubing made from an organic derivative of cellulose which are sealed at each end, e.g. by cutting from a continuous length of tubing with a hot knife, and are adhesively fixed in random arrangement between two foils. This subjectmatter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
