[Class 140] [Also in Group XXI] Resilient compound sheet material suitable for upholstery and packing comprises one or more layers 17, 19, Fig. 2, of pile fabric having a resilient cut pile and one or more layers of other material 18 such as plain fabric, felt, wood, or metal secured to the pile of the pile fabric. Alternatively, two or more layers of the pile fabric may be secured together pile to pile and/or pile to backing. The pile fibres may be mohair, wool, cotton, silk, or artificial silk, and may be stiffened by impregnating with casein or synthetic resin. The layers are united by a waterproof adhesive such as rubber latex or a synthetic resin. A number of layers 17, Fig. 7, of pile fabric may be secured together and enclosed in a layer 22 of pile fabric secured to the inner layers by means of latex. Strips of pile fabric may be wound to form tubes, rods, or bars of rectangular or other cross-section. Tubes may be formed by winding helically on a mandrel of round, square, triangular or other section a strip of pile fabric and a second strip of pile fabric or other fabric so that the margins of the strips break joint or cross one another. Such tubes, rods and bars may be cut into lengths which may be arranged side by side or superimposed in tiers to form padding for cushions or seats. Tubes may be sliced into rings for packing ammunition &c.
