Abstract

651,428. Compound sheet materials. BROWN, BIBBY, & GREGORY, Ltd. Feb. 27, 1948, No. 6022. Convention date, May 19, 1945. [Class 140] A flexible tearresistant protective covering, for a sheet or film of natural and/ or synthetic rubber or vulcanizable composition containing the same having a normally tacky uncured surface, comprises plies 10, 12 of regenerated cellulose united with adhesive 14 and subsequently embossed to provide upstanding portions, as at 16, extending over the entire surface which is to be applied to the tacky surface. The embossing reduces the area of rubber with which the covering is in contact and so reduces the frictional adhesion therebetween, thus facilitating clean stripping of the covering prior to the use of the sheet for repairing rubber articles, e.g. patching inner tubes of tyres. The adhesive comprises natural or synthetic resin or cellulose derivative, e.g. polyvinyl acetate, polyvinyl butyrate, alkyd resins, cellulose nitrate, cellulose acetate. as a filmforming ingredient, and a plasticizer therefor, and may.be applied as a solution comprising, for example, polyvinyl acetate, tricresyl phosphate and ethyl acetate to which a pigment or dyestuff may be added. The laminµ are consolidated under pressure, or heat and pressure. The embossed design, formed of and divided by straight or curved lines, may comprise diamonds, as shown, herringbone, squares, rectangles, parallelograms, rhombi, corrugations, and it is stated that, for optimum results, the raised elements of the design are spaced from each other by depressions as at 18 which intercommunicate to form straight depressions terminating at the edge of the covering so that when the covering is applied to the tacky surface air is not entrapped in individual depressions but is forced to the edges. The covering may form an interliner between consecutive windings of a continuous film of uncured rubber, Fig. 3 (not shown), or be applied to a rubber film having a fabric backing or one cured surface, Fig. 4 (not shown).
