Abstract

581,580. Compound sheet materials. BRITISH CELANESE, Ltd. April 11, 1944, No. 6703. Convention date, April 8, 1943. [Class 140] Waterproof or gasproof compound sheet material comprises a central thermoplastic film or foil, a plasticized fabric containing both non- thermoplastic and plasticized thermoplastic yarns on each side of the film or foil, and outer non-thermoplastic, or unplasticized thermoplastic fabric layers, all adhesively joined together. The thermoplastic material for the film or foil and the thermoplastic yarns in the fabrics may be a polyvinyl resin, a synthetic linear polyamide derived from amino acids or from diamines and dicarboxylic acids, an organic cellulose derivative such as cellulose acetate, propionate, or butyrate, ethyl or benzyl cellulose. The non- thermoplastic yarns employed in the fabrics may be cotton, linen, or regenerated cellulose. The film may contain a plasticizer such as triphenyl phosphate, dimethyl diethyl, or dimethoxyethyl phthalate, dibutyl tartrate, or triacetin. The plasticizer applied to the fabrics adjacent to the film may be those already mentioned and also ethyl paratoluene sulphonamide, monomethyl xylene sulphonamide, triethyl citrate, or mixtures. The plasticizer may be applied to the fabric as a solution in a volatile solvent such as benzene, methyl or ethyl alcohol. The absorption of plasticizer may be accelerated by the use of a penetrating agent such as Turkey red oil, xylene, toluene, monopol oil, pine oil, sulphonated pine oil, cyclohexanol, cyclohexanone, diacetin, tetrahydronaphthalene, or mixtures of two or more of these materials. The treated fabric may be aged, treated with methyl or ethyl alcohol, and again aged. The fabrics may be woven, knitted, knotted, or netted. The outer fabrics may be of cotton, or cellulose acetate. The layers are united with the aid of heat, pressure, and, if desired, moisture or a solvent. One of the outer layers may be made water-repellent, e.g., by treatment with an aluminium acetate-wax emulsion. The product may be used for water-bags, clothing, knapsacks, and tents. Specification 452,298 is referred to.
