[Class 120 (ii)] In a winding machine of the kind on which taper or cone-ended cheeses are built by the progressively reduced traverse of a yarn guide which is reciprocated by a reciprocating traverse bar acting through mechanism including an element engaging a slotted lever, the effective length of which is reduced as the bobbin increases in diameter by altering the position of the element in the slot, the thread guide 23, Fig. 1, is at the end of a pivoted and reciprocating arm 22 and is adapted to rest on the tube 4 or the cheese wound thereon, the arm 22 forming one limb of a bell-crank lever whose other limb 24 is in an open ended slot 19, Fig. 2, on one end of a rocking arm 10 which is pivoted at 11 between its ends and is mounted below the driving drum 8 and serves to impart the movement of a traverse bar 16 adjustably connected thereto, the limb 24 being removable from the slot 19 to stop the traverse of the guide 23 without stopping the machine by pulling the arm 22 back from the tube 4 or cheese 9 which is carried in pivoted arms 6 and may then be lifted off the drum 8. The arm 22 is weighted at 25 to remain in its operative position or in its inoperative position against a glass rod 26 parallel to the rod 21 on which the assembly 22, 24 is mounted. The guide 18 defining the slot 19 is formed with side elements 20 to direct the rod 24 into the slot. The arm 10 is connected by a link 14 to an arm 15 projecting from the bar 16, the setting being adjustable by means of holes 17.
