Abstract

567,984. Liquid-collecting devices for dynamo-electric machines. AKT.-GES. BROWN, BOVERI, & CIE. April 27, 1943, No. 6638. Convention date, May 16, 1942. [Class 35] In a. homopolar machine employing a mercury current collector, the contact resistance is reduced by keeping the parts in contact at such. a temperature that the adhesive forces between the mercury and the solid metal are greater than the forces of cohesion of the mercury. The necessary temperature, which is 100- 350 degrees Centigrade, is attained from the friction between the mercury and the iron, heat insulation being provided, or by using heating devices. Provision is also made for condensing mercury vapour and for returning the mercury to the contact points. The current is collected in an atmosphere practically free from oxygen. The excitation windings are disposed so that they are not exposed. to, mercury vapour.
