Abstract

567,770. Making nuts ; tapping. ATKINSON, J. Oct. 30, 1943, No. 17952. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iii)] [Also in Group XXV] Self-locking nuts having a portion 13, Fig. 1, tapped to a less diameter than the remainder 12, have the reduced portion slotted at 14 to provide resilience. The nut may be produced by tapping throughout with an undersize tap and then tapping the part 12 only with a standard tap. The threads in the part 13 may have crest and root clearance. The standard tap may be arranged to cut on one flank only, thus causing a reduction of pitch where the two threads join. The tapping may be effected by a composite tap having an undersize end portion. The portion 13 may be turned to circular form and may be grooved internally or externally.
