Abstract

567,764. Hydraulic master cylinders. PRATT, J. H. July 7, 1943, No. 11011. [Class 69 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXIV] Hydraulic master cylinders for the operation, for instance, of brakes, aircraft controls and ship steering gear, are provided with a piston-rod which extends through both ends of the cylinder and has parts 6a, 6b differing in diameter, the piston area 6d being formed at the junction of the parts. A relatively small piston area may thus be provided with a piston-rod of relatively large diameter. The rod slides through blocks 5a, 5b retained by a spring 7 that bears on sealing cups 8, 9. Communication of the cylinder with the reservoir when the piston is in the normal position is maintained by'grooves 6e in the piston-rod and passages 5c, 12. The pipe-lines are connected to port 11. Rotation of the piston-rod is prevented by engagement of a feather 13a on a 'washer 13 fixed to the rod, with guides 14 on the cylinders. External return springs 15 for the piston-rod are attached to hooks 4d extending laterally from the cylinder and to horns 13b on the washer 13.
