Abstract
566,929. Plastic compositions &c. CROSSLEY, A. June 8, 1943, No. 9211. [Classes 70 and 87 (ii)] [Also in Group XXI] An obturator for breech-loading ordnance comprises a pad of resilient composition which, under the axial pressure of discharge of the gun, expands transversely for sealing and on subsidence of the pressure recovers and returns to normal condition. In the form shown in Figs. 1 and 4, for use between the breech-block and the usual mushroom head of the axial vent, the pad C composed of ingredients as described later, is furnished with outer segmental metal rings f and an inner solid ring D. The rings have holes g for keying to the pad. The joints between the ring sections are bevelled. Fig. 6 shows modified rings formed of a multitude of segments A, B<1> with radial divisions, each segment having claws for anchoring to the pad. The pad composition is formed of a filler of asbestos fibre and a binder consisting of synthetic rubber such as neoprene with suitable vulcanizers, plasticizers and anti-oxidants. The pad is reinforced at the outside and inside by asbestos cloth F, G woven with brass wire. The asbestos fibre is mixed with a cream formed of the synthetic rubber and other ingredients and pressed in a mould to form a blank which is then removed from the mould and assembled with the rings. The whole is then repressed, being vulcanized in a die at 300‹ F. under a pressure of 1 to 3 tons sq. in. Percentage ingredients of a preferred composition are quoted in the Specification.
