Abstract
731,081. Universal joints. CROSET, L. P. Sept. 10, 1953 [Sept. 16, 1952; Feb. 4, 1953], Nos. 23233/52 and 3136/53. Class 80 (2). A universal joint for rolling mills &c. comprises an inner member 10 (or 11) having an annular series of outwardly projecting blades 32, and an outer member 27 carrying pivotally mounted pins 31 the inner ends of which are slotted to receive the blades. The pins 31, which may be, e.g., eight or ten in number, are mounted in radial holes in the outer member either directly or by means of rubber bushes 30; as shown, the pins are bonded to the rubber bushes which each have their outer circumferences bonded to a metal sleeve pivoting in the supporting radial hole, but alternatively the pins may fit into a second metal sleeve bonded to the inner surface of the bush. The pins can be made from steel, or a plastic of the phenolformaldehyde resin type, or from materials such as those used for brake linings, and in the latter case can be impregnated with graphite for lubrication. According to the second Provisional Specification, they may also be made from phosphor bronze, steel, or resilient material. A pin-retaining closure assembly 33, 34 surrounds the joint and packing means 35 &c. make it fluid tight whereby lubricant can be retained therein. The blades 32 may be laminated but are preferably solid, are rectangular in cross-section and have their outer edges of spherical form. In a modification, Fig. 4, the ends of two members 59, 60 are provided with blades or teeth 57, 58 received in slots in pins 62, 63 pivoted directly in a sleeve 61. In a similar form, Fig. 6 (not shown), the sleeve 61 is formed in two parts bolted together, and in a further modification, Fig. 8 (also not shown), the pins are each provided with a separate cover to retain them in the radial holes in the outer member.
