Abstract

1,033,628. Seals; universal joints. BORG-WARNER CORPORATION. Aug. 6, 1964 [Aug. 14, 1963], No. 32086/64. Headings F2B and F2U. In a universal joint the trunnion bearings 19 are each sealed by a sealing ring 40 which fits in a recess 43 in the bearing cap 13 and comprises a body 41 of elastomeric material bonded to a metal backing ring 42 and having a first flange terminating in an annular lip 46 which engages the surface 17 of the trunnion and a second flange 49 having a nose portion 49a which engages the recess 43 and a chin portion 49b which engages a flared surface 17a of the trunnion. The caps 13 are secured to the yokes 11 and 12 by fasteners 14 and held in compression with the cross 15 by tie rods 23 acting through thrust assemblies 26 and passing through bores 24 in the trunnions to engage a coupler 25 housed in a chamber 20 in the cross 15. When the bearings are charged with fresh lubricant under pressure from a grease gun applied to a nipple 31 communicating with the chamber 20, the lubricant pressure forces the lip 46 tightly against the surface 17 and excess lubricant is bled through a groove 51 in the metal ring 42 and past the nose portion 49a.
