566,125. Making hollow rings for gaskets or thermostats. HAWORTH, L. June 9, 1943, No. 9295.. [Class 83 (ii)] A hollow ring filled with gas or vapour under' pressure and hermetically sealed to serve as a gasket or joint washer or as a temperature sensitive device for effecting thermostatic control is made by assembling two parts separated in a plane normal to the axis of the ring with a gasgenerating material between them and then welding together along their abutting edges. The ring may be formed by cutting or stamping a flat annular washer from a sheet, pressing to arcuate or semicircular shape and assembling with its edges abutting a similar part or a flat annulus after introducing a substance producing a gas or vapour, e.g. by the action of heat, and the two parts are electrically flash-butt welded along the edges 13. For a temperature-sensitive device distorted axially with change of temperature, a ring of rectangular cross-section may be formed by stamping two parts from a flat plate or machining from the solid and then flash - welded together. Axially - extending flanges 14 are welded to the flat faces at 15 at the mean radius thereof to serve as a means of attachment of the ring. The ring may be used for adjusting the axial clearance between the shrouding of axial flow turbine blades and the adjacent shrouding of the stator blades.
