Abstract

565,548. Vehicle lamp masks. ARMSTRONG, R. H. May 6, 1943, No. 7218. [Class 75 (iv)] A mask for vehicle lamps comprises at.least three horizontally slotted plates 18, 19, 20, 21 fitted one behind another in a tube 16 which is secured with its axis inclined slightly downwards, e.g. 3¢ degrees, to a metal rim 13 having a bevelled edge 14 fitting the front of the lamp body. The slots 22 in the plates are 0.106 in. wide and are pitched at intervals of 5 /16 in., the punched-out flaps 24 of the plates 18, 19, 21 being bent up forwardly and those of the plate 20 being bent up rearwardly. The plates are spaced by peripheral flanges or metal rings 26 and the slots are arranged so that only rays rising not appreciably above the horizontal or impinging on the ground at a distance above four times the height of the lamp are emitted. The thickness of the mask assembly need not exceed ten times the slot width. A glass diffusing screen 27 is secured behind the rear plate 21 by a metal ring 28 having a flange 29 snapped over a bead 30 on the tube 16. The plates may be formed with slots 33 allowing water to drain through ports 34 in the tube 16 and an aperture 35 in the rim 13. For peacetime use, a sheet of glass may be provided in front of the slotted plates and the screen 27 omitted.
