[Class 75 (iv)] A cowl 1 fitted to the front of a lamp or lantern 2 and having slotted or apertured front and rear plates allowing direct rays to issue over an angle A is provided with a number of slots 3 to intercept any rays which would normally reach the inner side surfaces of the cowl. The slots 3 may be arranged parallel to the front and back of the cowl, at right angles to the intercepted rays, or at angles varying according to the inclination of the rays.
