Abstract

558,062. Vehicle lamp masks. DENNIS, E. D. June 19, 1942, Nos. 8399 and 9318. [Class 75 (iv)] A mask for vehicle head lamps &c. shown in Figs. 3 and 5 comprises a closing plate 1 of metal or other opaque material fitted to the front of the lamp in place of the usual glass-carrying bezel and having mounted in a rectangular aperture formed by bending outwardly a downwardly inclined canopy 4 and inwardly side wings 3 a number of metal louvre members 5 having depending flanges. The side flanges 8 abut against and are secured to the side wings 3 and the rear flanges deepen at their ends 6 so that the beam emerging at the sides has the correct downward inclination. The lower edges of the front flange 11 and side flanges 8 of each member 5 are level with the highest point 12 of the next member below it. The upper surfaces of each member is formed with inclined portions 9, 10, Fig. 2, the portion 9 being in line with the lower edge of the flange 11 of the member next above and the portion 10 being only slightly receptive of light. The ends 13 of the surfaces 10 shallow gradually opposite the ends 6 of the rear flanges. The members may have rounded corners and be provided with drainage holes. The wings 3 may support a translucent or transparent plate 14 at the rear of the units 5 and reflecting mirrors 33, 34 are provided between the members 5 to amplify the light rays issuing laterally of the lamp. The canopy is extended to cover the members 5 by welded flanged plates. The plate 1 may have a translucent panel to act as a regulation side light. Instead of the louvre members extending through the plate 1 they may be arranged wholly on one side of the plate. The side wings 3 may be dispensed with and the members 5 supported by angle pieces welded to the closing plate 1. Fig. 12 shows another construction of mask in which grids 21 arranged between louvre units 22 comprise members 24, 26 transverse and parallel to the lamp axis having their upper edges aligned with the edges of the flanges on the louvre units to prevent the emergence of light in undesired directions. The members 26 may be extended to form suspension members 27 for carrying the grids.
