[Classes 51 (i), 55 (i) and 55 (ii)] In producer gas apparatus of the downdraught type, the fire retort 2, Fig. 1, of the generator 1 is provided with means whereby the gas after being drawn or forced through the fire by suction or pressure is treated so as to destroy a large proportion of the tar content remaining in the gas before leaving the fire retort, the means consisting of a cowl 3 arranged within the retort 2 with its top at or near the hottest part of the fire and surrounding a gas outlet tube 5, 5a extending inwards from the bottom of the retort, the gas being drawn or forced into contact with the inner surface of the cowl 3 so that the heat will reduce or destroy the tar content of the gas which passes from the retort in a superheated state. The retort 2 is of funnel shape tapering downwardly to a circular lower portion 2c and is provided with a vertically adjustable air intake 6 extending down to the fire zone. The gas passes from the outlet 5, 5a to a passage 8 which serves to keep the gas hot before passing to the coolers. Instead of the air intake 6, two or more horizontal tuyeres may be provided to admit air 'above the cowl 3. The gas passes from the generator through an inlet 12 to a tar extractor 11, Fig. 5, comprising baffle plates 14, 17 enclosing a packing of steel wool. The packing may be cleared by removing the door 16 and baffle plate 17 and then withdrawing the plate 14 by means of the handle 15, 15a.
