Abstract

745,150. Carbonizing processes. COAL INDUSTRY (PATENTS), Ltd. March 30, 1954 [March 30, 1953], No. 8754/53. Class 55 (1). In a carbonizing process coal is passed continuously down a vertical retort having an upper low temperature zone 1 and a lower high temperature zone 2, gas being removed separately from both zones. The walls of zone 1 are formed with ducts 6 communicating with zone 2 through a collecting main 16 for the high temperature gas. A refractory lining 7 to zone 1 extends into zone 2 which has flues 8 fired by gas which may be part of the high temperature gas after passing through a bye-product receiving plant 20, cooler 21 and compressor 22. Another part of the gas is introduced into a coke cooling zone at 3 after which it serves to return heat to the high temperature zone. Steam cold air or other gases may also be admitted. Gases from the low temperature zone which include a further part of the high temperature gases used for direct heating in zone 1 are withdrawn through an outlet 9.
