Abstract

564,903. Inking apparatus. TRIGGS, W. W. (Harris-Seybold-Potter Co.). March 11, 1943, No. 3994. [Class 100 (ii)] In a lithographic printing-machine in which ink is transferred to the plate cylinder from two distributing drums, supplied from a single fountain, the ink is supplied to at least one of the drums by two rollers in contact with the drum, and ink is supplied to the rollers from the fountain so that each roller receives ink independently of the other. By this arrangement water transferred by the forme-inking rollers to the drum passes from the drum towards the fountain mainly by a path through one of the rollers separate from that by which ink is supplied to the drum by the other roller. As shown in Fig. 1, two pairs of forme-inking rollers 28, 29 and 30, 31 contact drums 26, 27, each of which is supplied with ink from a main distributing drum 25 through a pair of rollers 70, 90, and 71, 91. The plate cylinder 11 and drums 25, 26, 27 rotate in anti - clockwise direction. Water from the printing plate, which is supplied from an ordinary damping apparatus 15, is chiefly picked up by the roller 28 and is passed on towards the fountain 20 mainly by the drum 26 and roller 70, while ink substantially free from water is supplied to the plate cylinder from the drum 25 by the roller 90, drum 26 and roller 29. Similarly, the roller 91 passes on water picked up by the roller 30, while ink is supplied to the roller 31 by the roller 71 and drum 27. The arrangement results in a more uniform distribution of ink on the plate cylinder. The rollers 28 ... 31, drums 26, 27 and rollers 70, 90, 71, 91 are mounted in side plates 130 adjustable by screws 46 and operable to lift the forme-inking rollers clear of the forme by eccentric pins 49 connected for simultaneous movement by arms 50 and link 51 and actuated by a shaft 56 through arm 55 and link 53. The bearings 128 of the drums 26, 27 are secured on guides 129 on the plates 130 against stop screws 131 by clamping screws 32. Rollers 90, 91 are mounted in open bearings 92, the shanks of which are mounted in brackets 95, 96 pivoted on a shaft 119 and having depending parts 100, 103 pressed apart by a spring 106 to hold the rollers in contact with the drum 25. The shanks of the bearings 92 are pressed radially outwards by springs 97. In modifications, the single rollers 70 and 71 are replaced by trains of three and five rollers.
