[Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] Die sets for use in stamping shovels from sheet blanks have a mandrel for forming the handle socket aligned with the shaping dies and means for actuating transversely movable dies to complete the formation of the handle round the mandrel. The lower die comprises a section 6, Fig. 2, grooved at 7 to form the handle, and a rear section 9, Fig. 1, to form the blade. Transversely movable dies 15, 16 are guided on the section 6, carry stops 48 for locating the blank 47, and are actuated by arms 17 on rock-shafts 18. having adjustable plates 20 that contact abutments 23a on the dies. Other arms 24 on the rock-shafts are engaged by projections 26 on the presshead 2 to swing the shafts. Tension springs 28 return the dies. The mandrel 3, Fig. 3, is carried by a swinging and vertically movable pillar guided in a sleeve 5 and supported by a spring 33. A handle 36 carried by a collar 32 on the pillar has a pin 37 that enters a hole in a plate 39 fixed to the presshead to maintain the mandrel 3 in line with the handle-forming part 12 of the upper die 10 during the descent of the presshead. After the socket portion has been closed round the mandrel a pawl 41 engages a pin 40 on the collar 32 to prevent the ascent of the mandrel with the presshead and cause disengagement of the pin 37 from the hole. The mandrel is now swung by the handle 36 to carry the finished shovel to a convenient position for removal, the pin 37 riding on the undersurface of the plate 39. After removal the mandrel is swung back to normal position when the pin re-enters the hole and the spring 33 returns the parts to their initial position.
