Abstract

513,641. Punching ; riveting. LITTELL MACHINE CO., F. J. March 12, 1938, No. 7778. Convention date. March 13, 1937. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] Making wheels.-A combined punching and riveting machine comprises piercing and riveting punches mounted at opposed angles to the vertical and co-operating each with a die supported in alignment therewith, the workpiece being carried by means permitting indexing rotation and also bodily movement of the workpiece in a plane substantially parallel to that of the piercing punch, said bodily movement being resisted by resilient means adjacent the workpiece end of the supporting means. A piercing punch 27 and a riveting punch 28 are carried by slides 24 reciprocated in angularly adjustable brackets 26 by cranks 12, 13 through adjusting screws 22, slides 20, and links 23. Rivets fed from a hopper 30 and down a shoot 31 are delivered to the riveting tool by a plunger 34 which is actuated by levers 35, 36 from a cam 37 reciprocating with the slide 24. The workpiece, such as a wheel rim 93 and spider 92, is supported at the forward end of a shaft 40 which is mounted to pivot in a plane parallel to the piercing punch about a pivot 42, this movement being resisted by a spring 64 supporting the forward end of the shaft through a slide 57 and a link 56. A plate 43 carrying the pivot 42 is angularly adjustable on the machine frame. An indexing plate 45 is fixed to the rear end of the shaft 40, notches 46 in its periphery being engaged by an indexing pawl 47 carried by an arm 48 pivotally mounted on the shaft 40, and by locking pawls 49, 50. Brake straps 52 take up loose play. A cam 17 actuates the arm 48 through links 71, 72, 75, 76, downward movement causing disengagement of the pawl 50 by a roller 77 and upward movement effecting an indexing movement by the pawl 47, the pawl 50 then engaging the next notch 46. The cam 16 permits forward axial movement of the work clear of the dies under the action of a spring 96 and effects positive retraction through links 80, 81, 84, 86. The work is carried on a shouldered disc 101 and is located by a pin 103. A clamping member 106 having spider arms 107 to engage radial inward projections on the work piece is caused to grip the work by an internally threaded hand wheel 109 and, is retracted upon release of the handwheel by a spring 108. Pins engaging cam recesses produce a rectilinear movement during the first part of the retraction followed by an angular movement to free the arms. 103 from the work. The punch 121 cooperates with a die mounted in a knee 116. The punch is returned by a ball 122 engaging a recess therein, and pressure is applied to it through a hardened steel anvil 124. A stripper 128 is caused to contact the work in the initial descent of the tool by springs, and after the punching operation is held in engagement with the work, until the punch is retracted, under the action of cam-controlled fingers 133. The hole so formed is brought in the next indexing operation between the riveting punch 28 and anvil 95. A rivet fed by the plunger 34 is held between spring-pressed fingers 142, until released therefrom by engagement of projections with stops 147. The anvil 95 has stepped surfaces 150 which engage similar surfaces on a member 151, the latter being moved horizontally by a cam 155 to raise the anvil 95 for the riveting operation against the action of springs 153. The clutch 15 is initially engaged by depressing a pedal 165, which, through links 163, 162 actuates a latch 158 to cause engagement of a clutch pin 157. A latching block 166 is brought below a retaining member 167 and the clutch is retained in engagement until, at the end of the complete revolution of the work carrier, a roller 177 strikes a latch 175 to move a trip rod 170 through a link 174, whereupon the clutch is disengaged. The trip rod may also be actuated at any time by operation of a handle 172.
