My invention relates to mechanisms for supplying piecesof material and for moving them to different positions :for various operations thereon by different devices comprised in the structureof a punch press or similar machine, ,and an object of my invention, among others, is l the provisionof means for utilizing the movements of the press to a maximum extent by effecting a number of different operations successively upon a plurality of blanks at each reciprocating movement of the press head, whereby a series of different operations are progresslvely performed upon each blank in its travel to different positions with respect to said head. One form of mechanism embodying my ,i nvention, and in the construction and use of which the objectsjherein set out, as, well as others, may be attained, is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in Which Figure 1 isa view in front elevation of a portion of the frame supporting my 11mproved feeding mechanism, some of the smaller parts being omitted, for clearness tion.

In the accompanying drawings the numeral 1O denotes one of the side parts of a machine embodying my improved blank feeding mechanism, 11 a cross head connecting the side parts, 12 an operating shaft for the punch head and 13 ,the punch he ad operatively connected with the shaft 12 and-guided by the side parts 10 in a manner that will be readily understood, the shaft 12 being connected with the driving mechanism {of the machine as by means of pitmen 9 in a Well known manner.
The strip feeding mechanism comprises means for projecting the end of astrip that extends, as fronra roll supported on a stand or otherwise into position to be acted upon and also to be cut off, theblank comprising the cut off portion then being further acted .upon by the mechanism, this strip feeding mechanism comprising a strip feed slideblock 14 mounted for reciprocating moven ent on a slide arm 15 secured to and pro jecting from the side part 10, and as shown in Figure 20f the drawing. An anvil 16 on the siide block receives the strip 17 that .is extended between said anvil and a gripper 18 in the form of a lever pivotally mounted .on the block 14 andhaving a gripping jaw 19 to grip the strip ,in-a manner that will vbe readily under-stood, the gripper being connected by a link 20 with a grip operating lever 21 pivotally attached to a supporting arm 22 secured to andextending from the side part 10 of the frame, and as shown in Figure 1. The lever 21 is actuated by a cam-23 secured to a shaft 24 through the medium of a connecting rod 25, said cam shaft forming a part of the driving mechanism ,of the chine, but the driving connection therefore being omitted herein not essential to a clear understanding of the invention.
Blank ejecting mechanism comprises a sliding bar 26 mounted for longitudinal reciprocating movement in a groove 27 in the arm 15, said bar having an ejecting pusher 28 secured to and projecting from its end through an opening 29 in the side part 10 of the frame, this pusher being of inverted trough shape to fit upon a forming die to be hereinafter described. This bar 26 is operatively connected to the lever 21 for operation thereby and as shown in dotted lines in Figure 2 of the drawing. A strip retaining pawl 30, in the form of a bell crank lever, is pivotally supported on a bracket within the opening 29, one arm of said lever resting in contact with the strip 17 and the other arm of said lever bearing a weight 31 that acts to hold the opposite end of the lever engaged with the strip that is pressed into contact with a spring seated detent jaw 38 (the spring not being shown herein) located in a socket in a bracket 32 that is secured to 'the side part 10 and that supports the pawl 30, the end of the lever or pawl opposite the gripping end bearing the weight 81. That portion of the side part 10 supporting the bracket 32 is cut away in Figure 2 of the drawings.
The end of the strip 17 is pushed by the mechanism just described into an opening formed between a housing 34 and a die block 35 supported on a bed 36 of the machine, said housing being secured to the die block in any suitable manner, as by means of screws, and being recessed to form an opening for the reception of the end of the strip, and as shown .in Figure 4 of the drawing. A strip positioner 37 is located in a recess in the die block 35 and is spring pressed into contact with the end of the strip 17 as it passes into the housing 34, and as shown in Figures 4 and 5 of the drawings. A hole is formed in the housing through which a cutting punch 38 secured to a punch plate 39 passes in the operation of cutting off the end of the strip 17 to form a blank 40, a cutting die 41 secured in a recess in the die block 35 acting in co operation with the cutting punch to sever the end of the strip 17, and as shown in Figures 4 and 5.
The punch plate 39 is carried by posts 42 secured as by means of screw bolts to said plate, said posts projecting loosely into the die block 35 and having stops to limit their upward movement under pressure of springs 44 upon which the punch plate 39 is seated it being understood'that said posts are loose for sliding movement only and that they are nicely fitted within their sockets to obviate any lateral movement. The plate 39 is loosely connected with the punch head as by means of hooks 45 in a manner common to machines of this class.
A spring pressed blank retainer is located in a recess in the plate 39, its lower end being forced by said spring into contact with the blank 40 to retain said blank against the die block 35 when the end of the strip 17 is being pushed into the housing to overlie said blank. In this movement of the end of the strip it first encounters the rounded end of a guide 47 located at the edge of the hole through which the punch 38 passes and as shown in Figure 5 of the drawings, the end of the strip at this time having passed the end of the blank underneath it, and in its further movement the end of said strip encounters the end of the retainer 46 and pushes it upward sufficiently to permit the end of the strip to pass.
As hereinbefore explained the housing 34 is provided with a hole for the passage of the punch 38, this hole 48 being located at some distance from openings 49 in the housing for passage of stamping punches 50 secured to and projecting from the punch plate 39, there being as many of these stamping punches as may be desired. for marking, names, trademarks &c., on the end of the strip 17 and that is effected at the same time the end of the strip is cut off to form the blank 40.
After said blanks have been created they are transferred to forming mechanism that comprises two transfer pushers 51 secured to and projecting from the ends of transfer slides 52 longitudinally movable in transfer housings 53 secured to projecting portions of the die block 35, and as shown in Figure 3 of the drawings. The slides are connected by links 54 with branches 55 of a transfer lever that comprises a shaft 56 journaled in hearings in brackets 57 secured to the back of the bed 36, and as shown in Figure 6 of the drawings, said lever further comprising an actuating arm 58 secured to the shaft 56 and projecting for operation by a transferring cam 59 secured to the cam shaft 24. The transfer pushers project through holes in the back of the housing 34, said housing being open at its opposite or front side for the passage of blanks from within the housing by the operation of said pushers.
From the foregoing description it will have been noticed that the blanks underlie the end of the strip at the time the blanks are renoved from the housing in the manner above described, the pushers 51 moving said blanks from beneath the end of the strip, and from this position said blanks pass over the tops of spring seated supporting pins 60 and against positioning fingers 61 projecting from the ends of spring seated positioning and supporting pins 62, said pins being located in recesses in the block 35, and as shown in Figures 7 and 8 of the drawings. V In accordance with the provisions of the patent statutes 1 have described the principles of operation of myinventiomtogether with the device which '1 now consider represent the best embodiment thereof; but

3. A .machine comprising means for mov- :ing ajblank to aiposition overlying and ;rest- Ting upon anotheriblank, means for moving the othenblank from lund erneath the first blank to another position, and means .for sinuiltaneously performing an operation .upon eachot saidiblanks. i

A machine including means for moving ,zublankin onedirectionto a station occupied ,by another :bla-nk, ;means for. moving said 1 other blank -:i.n a transverse direction :to another position,,anda single member carry- :ing Work performing elements for simultaneously :penforming :an operation upon each of said-blanks, andmeansuforaremoving said :blanksiin thezinitial direction of movement.

A machine comprising means for mov- .ing a blank in one direction to .a position ovenlying and resting upon another blank, means'formovingthe otheriblankina transverse direction from underneath the first blank-to anotherposition, and means for simultaneously performing an operation :upon each ofsaid blanks. d l

A vmachine comprising means for mov- ;ing aiblanlntoa position overlyingand rest- --;1ng uponanother blank, means for imparting .movementtothe ,under :blank simultaneously vith the movement of the first mentioned gblank to removeit from underneath the first blank and to'anotherposition, anda single means forsimultaneously performing an op -era-tionuponeachofsaid blanks.

A maohine comprising means forfeeding "theend portion of a strip of material to one station occupied by a blank previously cut .ifrom said strip, means for imparting movenent to-said blank simultaneously with the movement of the strip to another position, and -means for cutting off theend of said strip. i V i 8. A machine comprising means for feedingthe end portionota strip of material in one direction to a position overlying a blank prcviorisly cut from said strip, means for next moving said blanflk in a transverse directionifromuncerneath the end of the stripto a d-ifierentposition, and means for next severing the end of said strip to form a blank (ill and, simultaneously therewith, for performing an operation upon each of said blanks.
9. A machine comprising means for feeding the end portion of a strip of material to one station occupied by a blank previously cut from said strip, means for imparting movement to said blank simultaneously with the movement of the strip to another position, and means for simultaneously cutting off the end of said strip and for performing an operation on said blank.
10. A machine comprising means for feeding the end portion of a strip of material to one:station occupied by a blank previously cut from said strip, means for moving said blank to another position, and means for simultaneously cutting off the end of said strip for performing an operation on said out off end and for performing an operation on said blank.
11. A machine comprising means for moving a blank to a station occupied by a second blank, one of said blanks overlying the other, means for moving said second blank from said station, while the first blank remains and means for performing an operation upon one of said blanks in said station.
12. A machine affording two stations to receive blanks for operation thereon, comprising means for positioning two blanks at one of said stations, means for moving one of said blanks separately from one of said stations, and means for simultaneously performing an operation on both of said blanks when located one at each of said stations.
13. A machine comprising a head having a reciprocating movement, means for feeding a relatively long blank longitudinally to a position underneath said head and then for feeding another relatively long blank laterally to a second position underneath said head and after each reciprocating movement thereof, and means for causing said head to effect an operation upon a plurality of blanks at each reciprocating movement of the head and in said different positions.

A' machine comprising a head having a reciprocating movement, means for feeding the end of a strip in one direction to a position underneath said head and then for feeding a blank previously cut from said strip in a transverse direction to' a second position underneath said head, and between succeeding reciprocating movements of said head, and means for causing said head to effect an operation upon a plurality of blanks and to sever the end portion of said strip at each reciprocating movement of the head.
15. A machine affording stations at which operations are performed upon blanks, com prising means for moving blanks from one to another of said stations, and a single pusher carrying device operable to simultaneousa blank from one of said last mentioned sta tions.
16. A machine affording a plurality of stations at which different work is performed, comprising means for simultaneously moving blanks in the same direction to the first station and from the last station, means for moving blanks in a transverse direction from one to the other of said stations, and means for performing operations upon said blanks at each of said stations.
17. A machine affording a plurality of stations at which different work is performed, comprising means for simultaneously moving blanks in the same direction to the first station and from the last station, means for then moving a blank from one to another of said stations, and means for then operating upon a blank at each of said stations.
18. A machine affording a plurality of stations at which different work is performed for receiving blanks, comprising means for moving blanks in one direction from one to another of said stations, and means for simultaneously feeding the end of a strip of material to one of said stations, for removing a formed blank from another of said stations, and a reciprocating head having means for simultaneously cutting off the end of said strip, for stamping a blank at one of said stations and for forming a blank into trough shape at another of said stations.
19. A machine affording a plurality of stations at which different work is performed for receiving blanks, comprising means for moving blanks in one direction from one to another of said stations, a movably mounted member for simultaneously feeding the end of a strip to one of said stations and for removing a formed blank from another of said stations, and a reciprocating head having means for simultaneously cutting off the end of said strip, for stamping a blank at one of said stations and for forming a blank into trough shape at another of said stations.
20. A machine including means for holding two blanks in work performing positions, a single blank pushing device for simultaneously moving a new blank into the machine above one of the two blanks and the other of the two blanks out of the machne, and an additional blank pushing device for moving the blank underlying the new one into the work performing position formerly occupied by the other of said first two blanks.
21. A machine including means for holding a blank of elongated formation in a work performing position, means for moving an additional similar blank longitudinally into the machine, and means for guiding the additional blank into a position above and in contact with the first mentioned blank.
22. A machine including means for holding a blank of elongated formation in a work 1y feed a blank to the machine and to move performing position, means for moving an additional similar blank longitudinal into the machine, means for guiding the additional blankinto a position above the first mentioned blank, and means for moving the first mentioned blank transversely out from under the additional blank.
23. A machine including relatively movable members, cutting elements carried by said members, a housing associated with one said members, means for moving a strip into said housing to have a blank out there from, means for guiding the end of the strip into a position above a previously cut blank, and means for removing said previously cut blank from beneath the end of the strip prior to the cutting of a new blank.
24. A machine including relatively movable members, cutting elements carried by said members, a housing associated with one of said members, means for moving a strip longitudinaly into said housing to have a blank cut therefrom, means for guiding the end of the strip into a position above a previously cut blank, and means for removing said previously cut blank transversely from beneath the end of the strip prior to the cutting of a new blank.

A machine including relatively movable members, cutting elements carried by said members, a housing associated with one of said members, means for moving a strip longitudinally into said housing to have a blank cut therefrom, means carried by said members for guiding the end of the strip into a position above a previously out blank, and means for removing said previously cut blank from beneath the end of the strip prior to the cuttting of a new blank.

A machine including relativelymovable members, cutting elements carried by said members, a housing associated with one of said members, means for moving a strip longitudinally into said housing to have a blank cut therefrom, spring pressed plungers for guiding the end of the strip into a position above a previously cut blank, and means for removing said previously cut blank from beneath the end of the strip prior to the cuttin of a new blank.
2 A machine including relatively movablemembers, cutting elements carried by said members, a housing associated with one of said members, means for moving a strip longitudinally into said housing to have a blank cut therefrom, oppositely acting spring pressed plungers carried by said members for guiding the end of the strip into a position above a previously cut blank, and means for removing said previously cut blank from beneath the end of the strip prior to the cutting of a new blank.
28. A machine including relatively movable members, cutting elements carried by said members, a housing associated with one of said members, means for moving a strip GEORGE FRANKLYN MATTESON.
