An object of the invention is to provide an improved machine which will perform speedily .andfwith great accuracy one or more of the operations of punching positioning 7 i holes, stamping identifying symbols and scarfing the edgev portions of heel blanks, the term scarf being used herein to describe a surface-of considerable bevel formed by the removal of a substantial amount of material from a blank.
With this object in view an important feature of the invention resides in an organized machine in which are combined means for forming a positioning surface upon a heel 5 blank and means for scarfing an edge portion of the blank. Preferably, the scarf is formed in a predetermined, fixed relation to the said positioning surface and to this end the illustrated machine is provided with a punch for 0 forming a positioning hole in the blank and a cutter operable to scarf an edge portion of the blank while it is held on the punch. Referring now to the drawings, 10 inclicates a portion of a stationary machine frame to which is solidly bolted a bracket 12 from which arise two uprights 14, 16. In the upper ends of these uprights bearings are formed for a shaft 18 to which is secured a hexagonal turret 20.
Upon each of the six flat faces of the turret 20 there is a heel blank holder which comprises a base plate 22 and a pair of spring jaws 24 which position and hold a heel blank by engaging its breast corners and side edges, as shown in Fig. 3. Each heel blank holder is provided with a depending spindle 26 and a pin 28, which enter corresponding holes in the turret and fix the position of the holder thereon. A set screw 30 arranged, when tightened, to bear against the spindle 26, retains the holder securely upon the turret.
Each holder is provided with a stamp 32 arranged to stamp a symbol upon the heel blank when the latter is pressed down upon the holder by a platen which will be de scribed hereinafter; and with a pair of punches 34 which project above the base plate 22 a distance somewhat greater than the thickness of the blank to be operated upon.
Co-operatively related to the turret 20 is a vertically reciprocable slide 36, movable in guideways formed in the frame 10 and actuated by a rod 38 which may be connected to a suitable source of power (not shown).
A bracket 40, which is bolted to the slide 36, has, at its forward end, a bearing 42 for a vertical plunger 44 to the lower end of which is secured, by a set screw 46, a platen 48. The plunger 44 is surrounded by a stiff compression spring 50 which tends to push the plunger 44 down through the bearing 42, the limit of such downward movement being determined by the adjustment of a nut 52 which is threaded upon the upper end of the plungerand is locked in adjusted position by a lock nut 54. The spring 50 constitutes a connection between the platen 48 and the slide 36 which is capable of yielding before excessive force is applied to the platen by the slide. The platen is provided with holes 56 which register with the punches 34 of that heel blank holder which is uppermost on the turret, the portion of the platen around the holes constituting a die to co-operate with thepunches 34 to form punch and die mechanism for punching positioning holes in a blank which is in the holder.
Also mounted upon, and secured to, the slide 36 is a scarfing cutter 58 which is moved downward, simultaneously with the platen 48, when the slide 36 descends. The vertical position of the cutter 58 in respect to the slide is determined by adjustable stop screws 60 which engage the upper end of the cutter and the cutter is secured in adjusted position by set screws 62.
From the foregoing it will be understood that when the slide 36 is reciprocated by means of the connecting rod 88 the platen 48 and the cutter 58 will descend and riserelatively to the turret 20. Mechanism for turn ing the turret about its axis will now'be described.
The cutter holding portion of the slide 36 has a projecting trunnion 64 upon which is pivoted the upper end of a connecting rod 66. the lower end of which is pivotally connected at 68 to one end of a rocker arm 70 which is oscillatable about a stationary stud 7 2 screwed into the upright 16. A split nut 74, screwed on the outer end of the stud 7 2, retains the rocker arm 70 and is locked in adjusted position by a clamping screw 76. A ratchet 78 is journaled upon a smooth intermediate portion of the stud 72 and is provided with six teeth 81, one for each heel blank holder upon the turret. A pawl 80, pivoted at 84 to the end of the rockerarm 70 which is opposite to that carrying the pivot 68, is held in engagement with the ratchet 78 by a spring pressed plunger 86 housed in the rocker arm. Securedto the ratchet 7 8 is a gear 88 which meshes with a similar gear 90 secured to the turret shaft 18 by a pin 92.
It will. now be apparent that reciprocation of the slide 36 will cause the connecting rod 66 to oscillate the rocker arm 7 O and, through the pawl and ratchet 78, and the gearing 88. 90, to rotate the turret through one-sixth of a revolution for each reciprocation of the slide.
The position in which the turret stops is such that one heel holder, at the station marked A in Fig. 1, faces outwardly in an inclined position in which a heel bank 94, to be operated upon, may be conveniently inserted in the jaws 24; another holder, at sta tion B, is in such a position that the punches 34 are in register with the holes 86 in the die or platen; and a third holder, at station C, is in such a position that when the cutter 58 descends it will chamfer off the material at the rear of the blank from one face toward the other, producing a scarf 96 upon the rear edge portion of the blank in that holder.
In order to remove the blank from its holder after the blank has been scarfed at station C, a stationary stripping finger 98 (Fig. 1) is provided. This stripping finger is arranged to enter a slot 100 in the rear portion of the base plate of the heel blank holder as the latter moves downward from station 0 and to strip the blank from the punches, allowing the finished blank to fall out of the machine.
The blanks operated upon by the present machine may be any heel shaped blanks upon which it is desired to perform the operations of punching, stamping and scarfing, or any of these operations. The particular blank illustrated herein is a plywood blank which is designed to be molded into a rubber heel and to constitute a nail anchoring element therefor. The symbol 102 in the present instance is a number/ indicating the size of the heel, but may be any symbol which it may be desired to stamp on the blank. The holes 104, made by the punches 34, are, in the pres ent example, utilized to position the blank accurately in the mold in which the heel is made.
The mode of operation of the machine will be apparent from the foregoing but may be briefly summarized as follows: Power being applied to the machine, the slide 36 is continuously reciprocated and theturret 20 is moved step by step. As each holder arrives at station A a blank 94 is inserted in it. When this holder arrives at station B the platen 48 descends, forcing the punches 34 through the blank and into the die holes 56. The platen presses upon the blank with sufiicient force to cause the stamp 32 to im- 7 press the symbol 102 in the lower face of the blank.
The holder, with the blank still firmly held upon the punches 34, now moves to station Cand, upon the next descent of the slide 36, the cutter 58 forms the scarf 96 upon the rear edge portion of the blank. Inasmuch as the blank is not removed from the punches between the punching and scarfing operations, the scarf is formed in accurately predetermined, fixed relation to the positioning holes formed by the punches, and this relation willbe invariable in all blanks operated upon Joy, the machine.

It will beseen that a blank at station C is scarfed simultaneously with the punching and stamping of another blank at station B each time the slide 36 descends and the spacing between the scarfing cutter 58 and the punch receiving die 56 corresponds to the spacing between the holders at stations B and C or, in other words, to the spacing between adjacent holders upon the turret.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:
1. In a machine for operating upon heel blanks, the combination of a heel blank holder movable successively through a work receiving station and a plurality of operating stations, a punch movable with said holder,
and means for forcing the punch into a blank in the holder at one of the operating stations.

In a machine for operating upon heel blanks, the combination of a movable carrier, a series of heel blank holders upon the'carrier, a punch in each holder, a reciprocable die, and connections between'the die and the carrier so constructedand arranged that successive reciprocations of'the die'cause the punches to be moved successively into cooperative relation to the die.
7. In a machine for operating upon heel blanks, the combination of'means for formblanks, the combination of means for forming a positioning surface upon a heel blank and means for forming ascarf upon an edge portion of theblank in predetermined, fixed relation to said positioning surface. I

In a machine for operating upon heel blanks, the combination of a reciprocable slide, apunch receiving die carried by the slide, a scarfingcutter carried by the slide and spaced from the die, a carrier arranged in cooperative relation to the slide, a plurality of heel blank holders mounted upon thecarrier in the same spaced relation as said die and cutter, and a punch in each of said holders.
13. In a machine for operating upon heel blanks, the combination ofa turret, a plurality of heel blank holders upon the turret, a slide, scarfing means carried by the slide, cooperating punching means carried by the turret and the slide, and means whereby reciprocation of the slide causes rotation of the turret;
14. In a machine for operating upon heel blanks, the combination of means for punching a hole through a heel blank, means for simultaneously stamping a symbol upon the blank, and means for feeding the blank to and from punching and stamping position.
15. In a machine for operating upon heel blanks, the combination of a heel blank holder, a punch mounted in said holder, a marking stamp mounted in said holder, a pressure applying platen arranged in cooperative relation to the holder, and means for eiiecting relative approaching movement of the platen and holder.
16. In a machine for operating upon heel blanks, the combination of a heel blank holder, a punch mounted, in said holder, a marking stamp mounted in said holder, a pressure applying platen arranged in cooperative relation to the holder, adie mounted in the platen to cooperate With the punch, and means for effecting relative approaching movement of the platen and holder.
17. In a machine for operating upon heel blanks, the combination of a turret, a plurality ofh'eel blank holders upon the turret, a symbol applying stamp upon each holder, a slide cooperatively related to the turret, and a platen and a scarfing cutter carried by the slide.
18. In a machine for operating upon heel blanks, the combination of means for punchinga hole in a heel blank, means forstamping a symbol upon the blank, and means for scarfing an edge portion of the blank.
19. In a machine for operating upon heel blanks, thecombination of means for simultaneously punching a hole in a heel blank and stamping a symbol upon the blank, and means for thereafter scarfing an edge portion of the blank.
