This invention relates to cutting machines, and I 1 cutting machine which is operable in timed relationship with an adjacent punching or stamping machine or other material working machine, so as to cut the scrap material therefrom into portions of suitable length for easy disposal.
Another object is to provide a scrap cutter operated from the reciprocable ram of a punch press to cut the scrap material into portions of predetermined length.
Another object is to provide a scrap cutter, as set forth in the preceding objects, wherein a lostmotion connection is provided between the scrap cutter and the machine to which it is connec'ed so that only such portion of the motion of the machine is transmitted to the scrap cutter as is necessary for the operation thereof.
Another object is to provide a scrap cutter, as set forth in the preceding objects, wherein the cutting plunger thereof is operably connected to the reciprocable ram of a punch press through an adjustable lost-motion connection which may be varied according to the thickness of the material being cut.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent during the course of the following description of the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary front elevation of a punch press having a material-feeding device and scrap cutter associated therewith and operable thereby in accordance with the present invention;
Figure 2 is a vertical section along the line 2-2 in Figure 1, showing the scrap cutter of the present invention in front elevation and with the operating bracket of the punch press shown in dotted lines;
Figure 3 is a central vertical section through the scrap cutter of Figure 2, taken along the line 3-3 in Figure 4;
Figure 4 is a rear end elevation of the scrap cutter shown in Figure 2; and
Figure 5 is a top plan view thereof.
Referring to the drawings in detail, Figure 1 shows a scrap cutter, generally designated ID, according to a preferred form of the invention, as connected to a conventional punch press, generally designated II, the latter of which operates a material feeding device, generally designated I2. The details of the punch press I I are conventional and form no part of the present invention, and the material feeding device I2 is disclosed and claimed in my co-pending application, Serial No.
2 576,821, led February 8, 1945, which issued as U. S. Patent No. 2,428,493 on October 7, 1947, for Stock feeding mechanism for punching, stamping, and cutting machines.
For purposes of the present disclosure, it is sufcient to state that the punch press II has a vertically movable plunger I3 reciprocable in guide members I4 attached to the upper portion of the punch press frame `(not shown). Secured to the lower end of the plunger I3 is a ram I5 having a punch unit I6 secured to the lower end thereof. The punch unitv IB is also conventional and may be of any suitable type, depending upon the nature of the workpieces to be punched or stamped. For purposes of illustration, the punch unit I6 is shown as consisting of a base or support I'I to which a pair of spaced punches I 8 and I9 are connected. The punches I8 and I9 cooperate with die portions (not shown) in a conventional die'unit 23; The latter is secured to the bed 2| of the punch press II by any suitable means, as by the bolts 22. The die unit itl is providedwith material guides 23 and 24 located on opposite sides thereof and configured to guide a strip of material 25 over the vdie unit 2U so as to be properly positioned for subjection to the punching or stamping operations of the punch unit I5.
The material 25'is' preferably in the form of a relatively thin elongated strip or band, such as strip sheet material, and is fed to the punch unit I 6 and die unit 20 by means of the material feeding device I2. The feeding mechanism of the feeding device I2 is operated step-by-step in -respense to the reciprocating motion of the press plunger I3 by means of a bracket 26 secured thereto as at 21 and having a downwardly extending arm 28 operably connecting the plunger I 3 to the material feeding device I2. At its opposite end the bracket 26 hasa second downwardly extending arm 29 having a slotted or recessed portion 30 through which an'operating connection is made to the cutting machine IB in order to operate the latter in .responseto the operation of the plunger I3 ina manner analogous to the operation of the material feeding device I2.
The cutting machine` I0 consists of a base-or bed 3I (Figures Zand 4;) having spaced vertical bores 32 in which are received the lower ends of uprightsor strain rods'33. ter blade 4I downwardly into shearing engagement with the cutting blade 41 and material strip 25 therebetween by reason of the pivotal connection between the eccentric arm 59 and pivot pin 56. This action cuts off the end portion of the material strip 25 into pieces of any desired length, depending upon the feeding rate of the material feeding device I2. After the cutting action has been performed, the cutting blade 40 and platen 3'! move upward in response to the upward motion of the operating arm 96, bracket arm 29, bracket 26 and press plunger I3. The foregoing cycle of operations is repeated indefinitely as long as the material strip 25 is fed into the scrap cutter I0 by the material feeding device I2.
While I have shown and described my invention in detail, it is to be understood that the same is to be limited only by the appended claims, for many changes may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention.
What I claim is:
l. A scrap cutter for connection to and operation by a material-working machine having a reciprocable member, said cutter comprising a frame having a guide structure, a blade carrier movably engaging saidguide structure for guidance thereby, a cutting blade connected to said frame, a cutting blade connected to said blade carrier in shearing relationship with said frame blade, and mechanism interconnecting said carrier and said machine member and responsive to the reciprocation thereof for moving said carrier in timed relationship therewith, said mechanism including a lost-motion connection disposed between said machine member and said carrier whereby to move said carrier a predetermined distance in response to a different distance of motion of said machine member.
2. A scrap cutter for connection to and operation by a material-working machine having a reoiprocable member, said cutter comprising a frame having a guide structure, a blade carrier movably engaging said guide structure, for guidance thereby, a cutting blade connected to said frame, a cutting blade connected to said blade carrier in shearing relationship with said frame blade, and mechanism interconnecting said carrier and said machine member and responsive to the reciprocation thereof for moving said carrier in timed relationship therewith, said mechanism including a lost-motion connection disposed between said machine member and said carrier whereby to move said carrier a predetermined distance in response toa different distance of motion of said machine member, and having an adjusting device adjustably engaging a portion of said lostmotion connection.

A scrap cutter for connection to and operation by a material-working machine having a reciprooable member, said cutter comprising a frame having a guide structure, a blade carrier movably engaging said guide structure for guidance thereby, a cutting blade connected to said frame, a material guide disposed adjacent said frame blade for guiding material to said frame blade, a cutting blade connected to said blade carrier in shearing relatio-nship with said frame blade, and mechanism interconnecting said carrier and said machine member and responsive to the reciprocation thereof for moving said carrier in timed relationship therewith, said mechanism including a lost-motion connection disposed between said machine member and said carrier whereby to move said carrier a predetermined distance in response to a dii-ferent distance of motion of said machine member.

A scrap cutter for connection to and operation by a material-working machine having a reciprocable member, said cutter comprising a frame having a guide structure, a blade carrier movably engaging said guide structure for guidance thereby, a cutting blade connected to said frame, a material guide disposed adjacent said frame blade for guiding material to said frame blade, a cutting blade connected to said blade carrier in shearing relationship with said frame blade, and mechanism interconnecting said carrier and said machine member and responsive to the reciprocation thereof for moving said carrier in timed relationship therewith, said mechanism including a lost-motion connection disposed between said machine member and said carrier whereby to move said carrier a predetermined distance in response to a different distance of motion of said machine member, and having an adjusting device adjustably engaging a portion of said lost-motion connection.
5. A scrap cutter for connection to and operation by a material-working machine having a reciprocable member, said cutter comprising a frame having a guide structure, a blade carrier movably engaging said guide structure for guidance thereby, a cutting blade connected to said frame, a cutting blade connected to said blade carrier in shearing relationship with said frame blade, a rotary element mounted on said frame, an eccentric device connected to said rotary element, a motion-transmitting element operatively interconnecting said eccentric device and said blade carrier, and motion-converting mechanism operatively connecting said rotary element and said machine member and responsive to the relciprocation thereof for rotating said rotary element.

A scrap cutter for connection to and operation by a material-working machine having a reciprocable member, said cutter comprising a frame having a guide structure, a blade carrier movably engaging said guide structure for guidance thereby, a cutting blade connected to said frame, a cutting blade connected 1go said blade carrier in shearing relationship with said frame blade, a rotary eement mounted on said frame, an eccentric device connected to said rotary ele` ment, a motion-transmitting element operatively interconnecting said eccentric device and said blade carrier, and motion-converting mechanism operatively connecting said rotary element and said machine member and responsive to the reciprocation thereof for rotating said rotary element, said motion-converting mechanism including a lost-motion connection disposed between said machine member and said rotary element whereby to move said carrier a predetermined distance in response to a diirerent distance of motion of said machine member.

A scrap cutter for connection to and operation by a material-working machine having a reciprocable member, said cutter comprising a frame having a guide structure, a blade carrier movably engaging said guide structure for guidance thereby, a cutting blade connected to said frame, a cutting blade connected to said blade carrier in shearing relationship with said frame blade, a rotary element mounted on said frame, an eccentric device connected to said rotary element, a motion-transmitting element operatively interconnecting said eccentric device and said blade carrier, and motion-converting mechanism v:ingla lost-motion connection disposedbetween,
