[Class 64 (ii)] [Also in Group XII] Apparatus for the heat treatment of metals comprises a series of independent ovens 16, Fig. 1, connected by damper-controlled branch conduits 15, 17 to flow and return pipes 14, 18 in communication with a heater 10, a fan 11 being provided in the flow pipe 14 at one side of the heater to effect the circulation of hot gases through one or more of the ovens. The heater may comprise externally heated tubes through which air or inert gases are passed or electrically heated apparatus having heating elements exposed to the gases to be heated. The pipes 14, 18 are arranged at the sides of the ovens and below ground level. In the oven shown in Fig. 2, the branch 15 discharges tangentially into the upper part of the oven and the gases leave through an aperture 27 at the bottom communicating with the branch 17. The oven is provided with a removable cover 25 and the charge is supported on a removable cylindrical carrier 28 having annular supports 29 for coils of wire or metal strip to be treated. Fig. 3 shows a bell-type oven to which the gases enter by the branch 15 discharging at the top of the oven. The gases leave the oven at the bottom. In a modified form of oven (not shown), the bell is of rectangular form and is used for heating metal plates; the gases entering and leaving the bottom of the oven. A shield may be arranged inside the bell to enclose the goods.
