564,414. Spring frames for motor cycles. NORTON MOTORS, Ltd., and FRANKS, E. M, Sept. 11, 1942, No. 12873. [Class 136 (iii)] [Also in Group XXXII] Relates to rear springing for motor cycles of the type in which the wheel spindle is carried by members slidably mounted at each side of the wheel on substantially vertical rods d secured to or forming part of the framing a, b, the load being supported by helical compression springs e on the upper parts of the rods. According to the invention, the upper end of each spring abuts a member, e.g. a sleeve g, which is slidable on the rod d and is located by an angularly - movable cam or the like having a number of steps of progressively - varying height measured from the axis of the cam, by engagement of which with the sleeve g the compression of the spring may be varied. As shown, the sleeve g is secured by pins passing through a slot in the rod to a plunger h slidable in the rod and engaging the cam which is rotatable on a pin k by an integral lever handle l or by a hand wheel m. A fork end (not shown) carrying one end of the wheel spindle, is slidable on the rod between the spring e, which thus takes the load on the wheel, and a lighter rebound spring f. An indicator may be provided to show which step on the cam is in use. In a modification, the spring abutment consists of a sleeve which is slidable on the rod d and engages identical stepped cams lying on opposite sides of the upper end of the rod and formed on the limbs of a forked lever pivoted on the upper frame member a. To prevent accidental movement of the cams, small projections on the sleeve engage complementary recesses in the steps on the cams.
