Abstract
562,365. Air brakes for aircraft. FAIREY AVIATION CO., Ltd., and YOUNGMAN, R. T. Aug. 8, 1941, No. 10099. [Class 4] An air brake comprising a flap which can be projected into the airstream by the extension of a bellows device, has the bellows connected by a single conduit to the throat of a venturitube in the airstream, the tube having a butterfly or other valve so that the bellows can be subjected to pressure or suction irrespective of the attitude of the aircraft. In one form, a collapsable bellows formed of three plates a, b, c, hinged together and provided with flexible side pieces j, k, is secured within a recess g beneath a wing. A flexible partition m limits the extension of the bellows. A conduit n connects the interior of the bellows to the throat of a venturi-tube beneath the fuselage, the tube being provided with a butterfly valve q or a diaphragm valve. Opening of the valve q causes collapse of the bellows, and closing of the valve causes the bellows to open. A trimmer flap on the tail plane operated from the same pressure or suction source may be provided to counteract the change of trim or the trimmer may be independently actuated. Intermediate positions of the valve q result in partial projection of the brake flap a. Specification 517,895 is referred to.
