Abstract
519,495. Controlling aircraft. FAIREY AVIATION CO., Ltd.. YOUNGMAN, R. T., and LOBELLE, M. J. O. Nov. 4, 1938. No. 32037.. [Class 4] A lift-spoiler for an aircraft wing, tailplane, or the like, comprises an interceptor flap arranged to be brought into operation by air pressure admitted through a valve-controlled opening at or near the leading edge of the wing or the like. As shown, a plurality of openings 13 are provided, controlled by butterfly valves 19 operable from the cockpit. The spoiler 17 is rigid with a larger flap 16'within the wing, and is normally held in a recess in the wing by springs 23. Upon the valves 19 being opened, air under pressure (due to the forward motion of the aircraft) is admitted to the space 12 and rotates the flaps to the position shown in dotted lines. The areas of the flaps are'so chosen that approximate balance of torque about the rod 15 is then obtained. Rubber sealing lips 21, 22 are shown. The interceptor flap is preferably disposed between the leading edge of the wing and the front spar, but may be further aft.
