Abstract

562,300. Electron multipliers. BOSCH, F. J. G. VAN DEN, and VACUUMSCIENCE PRODUCTS, Ltd. Sept. 5, 1940, No. 12621. [Class 39 (i)] Electron discharge apparatus particularly for dealing with ultra-high frequencies comprises in combination one or more secondary electron emitting electrodes and a number of pairs of velocity modulating electrodes so disposed that the alternating field between the electrodes of each pair synchronises with the passage therethrough of an electron. The velocity modulating fields may be produced between electrodes 18, 23, 25, 26, 28, 29 which are connected to one terminal of an alternator 8 and are disposed in pairs between electrodes 21, 24, 27, 30 connected to the other terminal. Alternatively, all the electrodes may be connected to one terminal of the alternator through variable phase changing impedances. One or more secondary electron emitting electrodes 11, 12, 13, 14, 15 are disposed between adjacent equipotential electrodes, and one or both of the alternating field electrodes may be secondary electron emissive. The output may be taken from between the collecting electrode 16 and electrode 30, or between the latter and the preceding electrode 29. The primary electron stream emanating from the cathode 10 may be signal modulated by a control grid 17.
