Abstract

562,151. Baling presses. GIBSON & SON, Ltd., J., GIBSON, G. T., and RAMSAY, W. W. Dec. 18, 1942, No. 18000. [Class 94 (i)] A self-contained baling press, particularly for compressing metal cans and boxes, comprises a motor unit mounted on a frame or bedplate, a pump or compressor driven by the power unit and arranged to supply pressure fluid to a hydraulic cylinder mounted on the bedplate, the piston of the cylinder being connected to the plunger of the press. The power unit preferably comprises an internal combustion engine 8, Fig. 1, and it pumps oil from a reservoir 11 to the cylinder 14 which is mounted horizontally in axial alinement with the press chamber 16. The top 18 of the press chamber is hinged at 19 to form a lid, and a spring 30 is provided for balancing the weight of the lid when it is open. The pressing plunger 36, Fig. 3, is provided with hinged flaps or wings 42 which are urged outwards by springs 45 into contact with the sides of the press chamber. The forward end of the chamber has converging sides 46 which force the flaps 42 inwards at the end of the pressing stroke so as to form the compressed material into a rectangular block.
