[Class 102 (i)] A rigid vessel f is attached to a reciprocating pump so that any air within it may rise to the discharge valve e. The volume of the vessel is so chosen that at a predetermined pressure the pump discharge ceases and the liquid is compressed within the vessel f. Preferably, the pump plunger b completely fills the cylinder at the end of its stroke. The vessel f may contain a piston so that the volume may be adjusted. In a modification, the discharge valve of the pump is fitted to the end of the vessel f. The connection between the vessel f and the pump chamber c may be closed, and opened at a predetermined pressure. Specifications 392,992, 411,151, 423,929, and 489,691 are referred to.
