In a pump used to feed a hydraulic cylinder (not shown) and having a piston unit comprising two concentric pistons 6 and 7, a delivery valve 16 in a cap 12 at the inner end of the outer piston 6 is spring-biased to the closed position so that during high-pressure operation only the inner piston 7 is reciprocated. The cap and pistons define a chamber 8, into which fluid is introduced, by way of a suction valve 15 in the cap. From a chamber 1 defined by the cap and pump cylinder 20 which communicates with the hydraulic cylinder. When the pressure in chamber 1 is low the pressure of the fluid entering chamber 8 on the suction stroke is insufficient to operate valve 16, and both pistons perform a working stroke together, at high-pressure the fluid in chamber 8 opens the valve 16 so that on the working stroke fluid is forced into chamber 1 by the inner piston 7 more easily than forcing the piston 6 downward. The pump cylinder is screwed into a valve block 22 in which inlet and outlet valves, 3 and 4 respectively, and inlet and outlet conduits, (27) Fig. 1 (not shown) and 28, 28<SP>1</SP> respectively, are provided to allow fluid-flow to the hydraulic cylinder, and from an external source of fluid. Fluid light seals are provided on both pistons, and the inner piston is connected to a control arm 9.
