561,941. Lubricating compositions. EVANS, E. A., ELLIOTT, J. S., and WAKEFIELD & CO., Ltd., C. C. July 29, 1942, No. 10623. [Class 91] Lubricating compositions containing active sulphur, viz. sulphur in a free or loosely combined form, with or without a halogenated organic compound, are rendered less corrosive to metals, particularly copper or cuprous alloys, by the addition thereto of a minor proportion of a mercapto-arylenethiazole or a derivative thereof, or an alkyl thiuram mono- or disulphide. Compounds specified comprise 2- mercapto-benzothiazole ; benzothiazole disulphide, and benzothiazole-hydroxy-methyl sulphide; and tetramethyl or tetraethyl thiuram disulphide. The proportion added is variable but is generally 0.02 to 0.3 per cent by weight. The sulphur ingredient may comprise a sulphured fatty oil or an organic polysulphide preferably one containing a carboxyl or ester substituent, such as a disulphide, trisulphide or tetrasulphide derived from an aromatic hydroxy ester or mixtures thereof ; a specific example of the latter comprises a mixture of di(3-carbomethoxy-4-hydroxyphenyl) polysulphides. The halogenated organic compounds specified comprise a chlorinated paraffin wax and a nitropolychlor benzene.
