[Also in Division C7] A penetrating oil composition comprises a light lubricating oil, an organic solvent, and a mercapto compound which is a mercaptan of the formula or a salt thereof, where R represents a hydrogen atom, an alkyl or hydroxyalkyl group containing 1 to 22 carbon atoms, or an aryl, alkaryl or carboxyl group, X represents one of the groups -(CHR<SP>1</SP>) n-1 COOH, and -(CHR<SP>1</SP>) m COOR<SP>11</SP> where R<SP>1</SP> represents the group or one of the atoms or groups within the definition of R, R<SP>11</SP> is the residue of a diester of glycerine obtained by removing the unesterified hydroxyl group, n is 1 or 2 and m is a whole number from 4 to 10. Examples of suitable compounds are 2 - mercaptoethanol, 2 - mercaptopropanol, 1- mercaptopropanol - 2, 1 - phenyl - 2 - mercaptoethanol, 2- phenyl - 2 - mercaptoethanol, 2- mercaptoethylamine, mercaptoacetic acid, mercaptosuccinic acid and reaction products of epoxidized fats and hydrogen sulphide. The sodium, potassium, ammonium and amine salts of these compounds are also effective. An antioxidant such as sodium sulphite, sodium borohydride, or sodium hydrosulphite may be present. In an example, 5% of phenyl mercaptoethanol is dissolved in a lubricating oil containing 40% kerosene and 30% butyl alcohol the pH being adjusted to 9 with dibutylamine.
