Abstract
1,189,304. Sulphur-containing phosphonate esters and intermediates therefor. BRITISH PETROLEUM CO. Ltd. 25 July, 1967 [26 July, 1966], No. 33482/66. Heading C2C. [Also in Division C5] The invention comprises compounds of the general formula wherein R is an alkyl, aryl, cycloalkyl, alkaryl or aralkyl group having up to 20 carbon atoms and R<SP>1</SP> is a vinylene or phenylene group which is unsubstituted or is substituted with a C 1 -C 10 alkyl group. They may be obtained by reacting, e.g. at 150-165‹ C. a phosphite (RO) 3 P with a dichloro compound of the formula to form a compound of the formula reacting the latter with an alkali metal hydrosulphide to form a compound of the formula and then oxidizing the latter, e.g. with a solution of iodine in potassium iodide and sodium bicarbonate solution. An example is given for the production of [(C 2 H 5 O) 2 P(O)CH 2 -CH = CH-CH 2 -S] 2 , the intermediate compounds (C 2 H 5 O) 2 P(O)CH 2 -CH = CH-CH 2 Cl and (C 2 H 5 O) 2 P(O)CH 2 -CH = CH-CH 2 SH being also isolated. The products are useful as lubricating oil additives.
