Abstract

A composition comprises a major proportion of a hydrocarbon or a lubricating oil containing a sulphur compound normally corrosive to silver and/or copper or their alloys and from 0,05 to 5% by weight of a teterocyclic compound soluble in said hydrocarbon or lubricating oil and having the general formula <FORM:0910910/III/1> in which Z represents O, S, or NH, R is an alkyl radical having 1 to 30 carbon atoms and R1 is hydrogen and an alkyl radical having 1 to 30 carbon atoms. The preferred compounds are 2-(dodecylcithio) benzothiazole, 2(hexyldithio) benzothiazole, 2-(dodecyldithio) benzoxazole, and 2(dodecyldithio)benzimidazole, many others being listed. The sulphur compound may be a sulphurized terpene, hydrocarbon oil, vegetable oil, animal oil, or marine oil, or a xanthate ester or an organic polysulphide. The base oil may be a mineral lubricating oil, a synthetic lubricating oil of the polyolefin, polyalkyleneoxide, or polycarboxylic acid ester type, a fuel oil, grease, insulating oil, animal or vegetable oil.
