Abstract
561,219. Winding yarn &c. UNIVERSAL WINDING CO. Oct. S, 1942, No. 14139. Convention date, Nov. 28, 1941. [Class 120 (ii)] In a yarn or like winding machine, a measuring device, for initiating the operation of a stopping mechanism when the package being wound reaches a predetermined diameter, comprises a member actuated, or adapted to be actuated, continuously by the drive of the machine and movable bodily by and with the growth of the package being wound ; the member may be continuously reciprocated endwise and may move into engagement with a stopping member controlling the stopping mechanism when the package reaches the predetermined diameter. As shown, the traverse guide is carried by a traverse frame 13 pivotally mounted on the traverse cam-shaft 6 so as to swing away from the winding spindle 5 as the package grows and the starting and stopping mechanism of the machine are as described in Specification 492,223 ; the member 50, initiating the operation of the stopping mechanism, has a circular hub 51 at one end rotatably mounted on an eccentric 55 formed as part of the toothed disc fixed on the cam-shaft 6 for engaging the end of a balanced lever 41, which when the yarn breaks or becomes exhausted, moves so that its arm is engaged by one of the teeth of the disc, the lever 33 being then lifted to release the detents 31, 32 and cause the stopping mechanism to act to stop the machine. The other end of the member 50 is formed with a shoulder 57 and with a slot 59 by which it is connected to the back of traverse frame 13 by a shed 62 so that the member can reciprocate relative thereto, a spring 68 being disposed between the member and the frame so that the upper end of the member may be adjusted towards or away from the frame by turning a nut 66, the eccentric 55 being mounted on a bearing that permits this adjustment. A sizing gauge 70 carrying a hardened steel block 75 is adjustably fixed on the lever 33 so that when the package reaches the predetermined size, the member 50 has been moved away from the winding spindle to a position in which the shoulder 57, during reciprocation of the member, comes into contact with the edge of the block 75 and lifts the lever 33 to release the detent 31, 32 and stop the machine as before.
