Abstract

560,424. Cooling charges ; superchargers. FORD MOTOR CO., Ltd. Dec. 18, 1942, No. 18054. Convention date, Feb. 9, 1942. [Class 7 (ii)] A turbo-supercharger for an engine having two or more banks of cylinders is attached to the rear thereof and connected to the exhaust ports which are located on the outsides of the banks, the delivery connections from the supercharger to the intake ports including an intercooler disposed between the cylinder banks and means to admit cooling -air thereto. The intercooler comprises a core 33 of thin metal tubes of rectangular cross-section which may be stacked to form vertical banks with spaces 42 between them for the passage of cooling air. The front and rear ends of the tubes are bent through 90 degrees, the latter to form a.connection to the blower 71 and the former for connection to a chamber or reservoir 45 communicating directly with the cylinder intakes 54. The base of the chamber 45 is shielded from cylinder temperature by an air space and its top is comprised by the base 53 of the intercooler casing 32. Strips 47 inserted in the air passages 42 of the intercooler direct the air currents through them and the casing 32 which is widest immediately in front of the core 33 guides some of the air directly on to the rear part of the core. The cooling air leaves the intercooler by a passage 30 leading to the turbine 73 which with the fan 71 is disposed at the lower rear part of the engine, and after cooling the turbine mingles with the spent exhaust gases.
