560,149. Conveyers. CROWN CORK & SEAL CO., Inc. July 9, 1942, No. 9578. Convention date, Sept. 9, 1941. [Class 78 (i)] A conveyer mechanism comprises a variable, rotary conveying element adapted to receive containers or other articles of different sizes from a conveyer, and means for driving the conveyer and element at relatively variable speeds. As shown, bottles are transferred from a washing machine 10 by a conveyer 12 to a conveyer 11 from which they are diverted by a transfer device 13 to a conveyer 14 and passed by a pocketed infeed dial 16 through a syruping mechanism 18, in the case of a softdrink filler, and transfer dial 17a to the rotary table 17 of a filling machine. An outfeed dial 17b subsequently removes the bottles to a rotary crowner or capper dial 19 from which they are transferred by a dial 20 back to the conveyer 14, which passes them to a conveyer 22 for transfer to a further point on the bottling plant. At the point of transfer from conveyer 14 to dial 16, it is desirable that larger bottles or containers should be moving at a greater speed than smaller ones, and to effect this the conveyer 14 is driven through a manuallycontrolled, variable-speed mechanism 24 interposed in the driving mechanism for the machine or driven from a separate source. The outfeed conveyer 22 may be driven similarly. One or both of the conveyers 11, 22 may be replaced by the conveyer 14. The dial 16 may be replaced by dials of different sizes having pockets of different conformation, or the size of the dial pockets may be reduced by superimposing thereon plates having pockets of smaller sizes, or a dial with mechanicallyadjustable pockets may be used. As shown in Fig. 2, containers a, b, c, d, e are properly aligned on conveyer 14 by guides 30 and are maintained in the pockets of dial 16 by an arcuate guide 31 which may include a jam detector 32 adapted to move outwardly and stop the machine should a container come between it and a tooth of the dial 16. A timing device for delivering containers to the dial 16 from the conveyer 14 in properly spaced relation, may be used in conjunction with the variable speed mechanism.
