Abstract

774,928. Wrapping machines. ROSE BROS. (GAINBOROUGH), Ltd. Dec. 15, 1955 [Jan. 4, 1955], No. 164/55. Class 94(1). [Also in Group XXX] Rectangular articles e.g. packets of cigarettes are transferred from one conveying surface 12, or which they rest on one face, to another convey ing surface 17, on which they rest on an adjacent face, by a conveyer chair 18 having spaced pushing elements 23 arrangeddur. ing movement of the chain about a sprocket 19 to engage one face of the successive articles and turn them through a given arc, e.g. a right angle, the pushing members being so mounted on the chain that the pitch line of the chain follows a path approximating to that followed by the transverse centre lines of the articles so as to minimise tilting of the pushing elements. The pushing elements 23 are mounted by means of a yoke member, Fig. 2, between a pair of chains 18 to extend upwardly through slots 20 in the surface 17 and in the end of surface 12. As applied to the sealing of polythene bags, into which the packets of cigarettes 11 have been placed by a preceding machine, the packets pass in turn from a delivery pusher conveyer 13 in front of a pair of laterally disposed orbital pushers 16 which deliver them one at a time against the downwardly curved entry end of support 17 for engagement by the pushing elements 23. The chains 18 are driven step-by-step in timed relation with the operation of the pushers 16 and with the preceding machine by Geneva gear 24, 25 to pass the packets in succession between surface 17 and a guide 26, and thence between heated plates 27 which seal the open ends of the polythene bags. The sealed packets then pass to a surface 28 on which they are received flat, for stacking by a reciprocating pusher 29 driven by a cam 31, a vertically reciprocating table 35 driven by a cam and linkage 36 and a collating pusher 37 driven by a cam and linkage 38. The drive to chains 18 includes a free wheel device and an auxiliary motor, the auxiliary motor being adapted to be switched on automatically for a predetermined period when the preceding machine is stopped so as to clear all the packets already delivered by that machine from between the plates 27.
