Abstract

1281974 Stacking bags; feeding and delivering sheets; endless conveyers WINDMOLLER & HOLSCHER 13 March 1970 [28 March 1969] 12168/70 Headings B8A B8C and B8R [Also in Division B5] Individual bags B from the delivery cylinder of a bag-making machine are collected by gripper units 15 in predetermined numbers to form packets P which are then conveyed to a stapling or banding station and thence to a discharge station. Each gripping unit 15 comprises gripping members 36, 36 co-operating with a supporting plate 26 and mounted by means of cranks 33 on a carriage 17 running on two pairs of wheels 19, 19<SP>1</SP>; 20, 20<SP>1</SP> in endless guide channels 14, 14<SP>1</SP> between rails 12, 12<SP>1</SP> and 13, 13<SP>1</SP>. The axle of wheels 19, 19<SP>1</SP> is pivoted to conveyer chains 4, 4<SP>1</SP> which are driven intermittently by a drive shaft 11, crank arm 10 and Maltese cross 9. At the collecting station A, the gripping unit 15 is held in an extended condition against the action of a spring by means of a roller 41 on one crank arm 33 co-operating with a guide rail 42 having a pivotal end portion 43 whose position is controlled by links 44, 45 and a thrust cam 46 on the drive shaft 11. When a preset number of bags has passed the counter 59, the drive shaft 11 is actuated, the rail 43 is withdrawn so that the hook members 36 grip the packet P, and holding fingers (40, not shown) are pivoted upwardly to hold the continuously-arriving bags on a depositing table (39) until another gripper unit 15 is at station A. At an intermediate station, a reciprocable stapler 16 inserts a staple through the packet. At the delivery station C, a pressure member 49 causes the gripper unit 15 to pivot about the axle of wheels 19, 19<SP>1</SP>, through a break in the rails 12, 12<SP>1</SP>, and the cranks 33 are pivoted by a fixed abutment 51 causing the gripping members 35, 36 to open and release the packet P, which slides down the supporting plate 26 into a magazine 53. A pressure member 56 clamps the packet in position and the magazine is rotated through 90 degrees to deposit the packet on a discharge conveyer 58. The magazine is rotated alternately clockwise and anticlockwise so that the bases of the bags face in opposite directions to facilitate stacking from the conveyer 58. In a modification, the discharge station is located near the top of the conveyer chain, so that the supporting plate 26 is inclined, and a pivoted lever (52) acts on the roller 41, causing the gripping members 35, 36 to open.
