Abstract

977,382. Closing filled packages; labelling machines; endless conveyers. R. W. BARRACLOUGH Ltd., and R. W. BARRACLOUGH. April 10, 1961 [Jan. 12, 1960], No. 1077/60. Headings B8A, B8C and B8F. Bags B have their necks closed and are labelled in a machine through successive stations of which they are moved by the action of endless belts 25, 26. The bags B are fed to the belts 25, 26 by being delivered via a shoot (not shown) to support rails 181, 182 (Fig. 10) and between locating plates 183, 184. The latter are brought together at the appropriate moment to both centre the bag and close its neck. This action is derived from respective cams on cam-shafts 63, 64 (64 only visible in Fig. 6). Endless belts 51, 53 are caused by cams 41a, 43a to swing together to grip the neck of the bag B and so convey the latter into engagement with the belts 25, 26. The latter stop when the bag arrives at a label-applying station (Fig. 13). The arrival of the bag B trips a switch 171 so as to initiate the release of suction from a pad 122 thereby releasing a label C which rests on a rail 121 extending from a bracket 49d (Fig. 6). A cam 123 on a cam-shaft 64 causes the lowering of a U-shaped member 128 which folds down the label C as shown in broken lines in Fig. 13. Cams 131, 132, on cam-shafts 63, 64, act through toggle linkages 141, 143 on heat-sealing heads 139, 140, which seal the side edges of the label to the bag B. The endless bands 25, 26 then carry the bag B to a second station (Fig. 15) at which the sealing of the opposed faces of the label C to the corresponding faces of the bag B is completed by the action of jaws 145, 146, actuated by similar mechanism to that associated with the members 139, 140. The jaws 145, 146 also seal the upper parts of the opposing faces of the label C to each other. At a third station (Fig. 18), a hole is punched through the label by means of a punch 164 acting in conjunction with a die 162 carried by a bracket 161. The bag is then delivered to a further pair of endless belts 50, 52, similar to the belts 51, 53. Arms 40a, 42a are then given an oscillatory movement away from each other so as to open the belts 50, 52 and deliver the bag on which the labelling has been completed. The belts 25, 26 and 50, 52 are driven by shafts 31, 33 and the drive is transmitted by the belts 25, 26 to the belts 51, 53. The intermittent rotation of the shafts 31, 33 is derived from a Geneva mechanism (Figs. 19-21, not shown). The arms 40a, 41a, 42a, 43a, derive their oscillatory motion from camshafts 63, 64 (64 only visible in Fig. 6). The belts 25, 26 may comprise chains 111 carrying bag-engaging members 113 outwardly urged from the chain by the action of spring 115.
