Abstract

945,419. Wrapping machines. CONTINENTAL CAN CO. Inc. Sept. 8, 1961 [Sept. 21, 1960], No. 32362/61. Heading B8C. Apparatus for applying a wrap-around wrapper blank to articles such as containers said blanks having two side panels hingedly connected to an intermediate panel and closure panels hingedly connected one to each of the side panels, comprises means for folding and closing the blank about a row or rows of articles and reciprocable tightening members engageable with the side panels of the wrapper to apply lateral forces thereto during the closing of the wrapper blank. Bottles 10 to be packaged are delivered into the machine along support plates 12 (Fig. 1) and wrapper blanks 11 with openings 16 to receive the bottle necks 17 are placed upon them and side panels 18 and 19 folded down as described in Specification 885,915. The bottles are advanced along by means of pushers 13 pivotally attached to drive chains 14 driven by sprockets 31. While travelling along the support plate the closing panels 20 and 21 are initiated upwards by means of bars 32 and 33. On reaching the tapered portion 34 of the support plate the tightening means are brought into operation. Each tightener 35 comprises a rod 42 having a head 138 at one end and a roller 43 at the other the tightener being mounted in a support 36 attached to a drive chain 37, said tightener travelling parallel to the bottles and being reciprocated by cam means 44. As the drive chain 37 moves over sprockets 38, 39 the roller 43 engages the ramp portion 45 of the cam and as it travels along this portion the head 138 is forced towards the support plate. When the roller reaches the straight part of the cam the head 138 is pressing against the side panel of the wrapper thus initiating the tightening operation, said chain drives 14 and 37 being synchronized to permit this. The tightening continues while the roller proceeds along the straight portion when the closure of the wrapper blank is completed as described in Specification 871,045. On reaching the ramp portion 46 the roller rides up it and the spring 47 causes the tightener head 138 to move away from the package and the tightening ceases. The package is then free to travel through the exit portion of the machine.
