[Class 68(i)] A cutter bar for a chain-type mining machine comprises side portions 17 each formed of two spaced rectangular bars 19 forming a support channel within which are removably secured by bolts 25 two Z-shaped bars 20 between which the chain channel 18 is provided ; angular wear strips 26 are secured at opposite sides of the chain channel, as by rivets 27. The pairs of bars 19 are tied together by a block 32 welded &c. thereto, while the bars 19 of each pair are reinforced by blocks 34 welded &c. between them. At the end of the cutter bar adjacent the machine body. a plate 36 is welded &c. to the lower surface of the cutter bar adjacent recesses 39 adapted to receive the cutter bar mounting means. The opposite end of the cutter bar comprises two semi-circular side plates 43, an intermediate nose member 44, and a semi-circular wear strip 52 secured together as by bolts 51 ; the nose member 44 has an anchoring portion 46 which extends between, and is welded &c. to, the bars 19 of each pair, and is also welded &c. to reinforcing members 48 which fit between the pairs of bars 19 and have rounded ends fitting corresponding recesses 50 in the plates 43. A tongue and groove joint 54 is provided between the plates 43 and wear strip 52, and the plates 43 have inwardly projecting parts corresponding to the wear strips 26, the plates 43 and strips 26 being of wear-resisting material and the remaining parts of common steel. Spacers may be provided between the Z-bars 20 and between the plates 43 to vary the size of the chain channel.
