Abstract
559,810. Controlling aircraft. GENERAL AIRCRAFT Ltd., WILLIAMS, L. C., and ANDRE DREWS, E. J. May 26, 1942, No. 7133. [Class 4] To increase the power of a tailplane and elevator assembly in aeroplanes having lift increasing flaps which cause considerable variation of load on the tail planes when moved from one position to the other, a gap is provided between the tail plane and elevator so that the elevator acts as a slotted flap as it is moved in one sense and with a decreasing slot effect when moved in the other sense, until, with the slot nearly closed, the elevator acts as a plain flap. As shown, an asymmetrical elevator 4<SP>1</SP> is pivoted about an axis 6<SP>1</SP> behind a tail plane 3 so as to form a slot 7<SP>1</SP> in its normal and uptilted positions. When the elevator is moved downwardly the slot effect diminishes. An assembly also is described in which the parts are in an inverted position, the selection of one or the other arrangement depending upon which direction, up or down, the more powerful elevator control is required. The elevator tapers in both thickness and chord towards the tips, and the slot also tapers reducing the gap towards the tip. According to the Provisional Specification the chord of the elevator is 20 per cent to 25 per cent of the total chord of the tail plane and elevator assembly and is movable through a range of angles from 25 degrees down to 50 degrees up.
