Abstract
321,851. Tips, E. O. Dec. 3, 1928. Controlling. - A dashpot or similar device is coupled to a control surface and is adapted so to be influenced by the airflow in flight that its resistant property is varied from a normal minimum to a maximum when the aircraft has attained a predetermined speed, thus preventing unduly rapid movement of the control column. In one form control cables aa of an aeroplane bare connected with the opposite ends of a lever c on a cross-shaft d on which is a bell-crank lever e, f, one arm e of which is connected by a link g with a lever h on an elevator j. A dash-pot cylinder k is formed with a byepass m and its piston n is connected by its connecting-rod o with the arm or the lever ef. A valve p arranged in the bye-pass m is adapted to be operated by a vane projected into the air stream and adapted to be moved against the action of a spring r to close the valve p. Pilot holes ss in the piston n prevent jamming of the controls should the valve p be completely shut ; alternatively a shear pin may be employed at the connection of the rod o with the arm f. In another form a dash-pot in the form of a drum having one or more radial partitions and a piston having curvilinear motion is provided, having a bye-pass controlled in a manner similar to that described above. In this case the pilot holes ss may be formed either in the radial partitions or in the piston.
