Abstract

559,305. Vehicle brakes. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION. July 9, 1942, No. 9570. Convention date, Oct. 13, 1941. [Class 79 (v)] [Also in Group XXXIV] In a vehicle brake system the force applied by the applying means of the brakes of the front wheels to the friction element or elements thereof is greater or less than the force applied to the friction element or elements of the rear wheel brakes according to the direction of travel in order that the braking action may correspond to the unequal distribution of the weight as between the front and rear wheels due to deceleration both in forward and rearward travel or due to the car being on a gradient. A hydraulic system is shown in which the brakes are of the kind comprising each a pair of shoes that anchor at one end or--the other-according to the direction of rotation of the drums. The application cylinders each have pistons 17a, 17b of different area and the disposition of the cylinders is such that when the brakes are applied during forward travel the shoes of the forward brakes A anchor on the smaller end of the cylinders and these shoes of the rear brakes B anchor on the larger ends of the cylinders. The larger and the smaller pistons are thus respectively effective on the front and rear brake.shoes and the braking action on the front wheels is thus greater than on the rear wheels. During rearward travel the smaller pistons are effective in the front brakes and the larger piston on the rear brakes and the braking action in the two pairs of wheels differs correspondingly. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 states also that this brake system provides for the redistribution of the weight on the wheels effected when the car is on a gradient. This subjectmatter does not appear in the Specification as accepted
