Abstract

559,269. Bottle - stoppering machines. PAINTER, W. H. Aug. 10, 1942, No. 11161. [Class 125 (ii)] Screw stoppers for filled bottles are tightened, after having been partially. screwed into position by hand, by a machine comprising a stationary vertical column 1 about which rotates an assembly including a turntable 11 and a set of vertical stopper-tightening spindles 26 above the turntable. To the vertical column 1 is attached a gear wheel 25 with which meshes a pinion 24 on each spindle 26 so that the spindles are rotated as they are carried round with the assembly. The top portion of each spindle is formed with a spherical bearing portion 29 which, under spring pressure 30, rides on a stationary cam 3, acting to depress the spindles. so to bring a resilient conical bush at the lower end of each spindle into contact with the partly tightened stopper to tighten the same. The bottles 16 are fed into the machine between guides from a rotating disc which overlaps the turntable 11. The turntable embodies a starwheel 13 which separates the bottles circumferentially, the bottles being prevented from rotating on their axis by friction discs 17 on the turntable. The spindles 26 are carried in a plate 19 attached to a sleeve 9 rotating on the vertical column, the plate 19, with members 37, 38 housing the cam plate 3, gears 24, 25 and spindles 26. To allow for bottles of varying sizes, the cam plate 3 may be spring loaded at 39.
