Abstract
503,973. Stoppering etc.; chucks. HAYWARD, TYLER, & CO., Ltd., and HOWARD, G. P. E. Nov. 12, 1937, Nos. 31116/37 and 9208/38. [Class 125 (ii)] [Also in Group XXII] A device for stoppering and unstoppering bottles, consists of a flanged plug 11, Fig. 2,. screwed and pinned to a driving-shaft 1 and screwed into a sleeve 12. An inner flange on the sleeve 12 serves to retain a friction pad 13, while the outer flange forms, with the flange on the plug 11, a bearing for an inertia member consisting of three superposed annuli 16.. 18, held together by bolts. The inner edge of the lowermost annulus 18 is coned to guide the stopper. The inner edge of the centre annulus 17 is formed as a cam to engage grippers 15, pivoted to the sleeve 12. When the stopper of a bottle is pushed up into contact with the pad 13 the whole inertia member 16 .. 18 is lifted and disengaged from its driving means. At the same time the rotation of the inner elements 11 .. 13 is checked so that the inertia member 16 .. 18 rotates upon the sleeve 12 and moves the grippers into contact with the sides of the stopper, which is then unscrewed. When the bottle is lowered after the removal of the stopper, the inertia member 16 .. 18 drops back into engagement with its driving means and opens the grippers to release the stopper. A light braking action may be applied to the annulus 17, when the inertia member is lifted, to supplement the action of the stopper top on the friction pad. The device may also be used for tightening stoppers Fig. 1 shows a device for tightening stoppers which may also be used for unstoppering. The inertia member consists of a vertical shaft 1 carrying a friction pad 3, coned guide 4 and fly wheel 5. The upper part of the shaft 1 passes through a sleeve 6 to which is secured a continuously rotated pinion 7. The flywheel 5 normally rests upon a friction surface on the upper face of the pinion 7 the action of gravity being supplemented by a spring 9. When a bottle stopper, guided by the member 4, is pressed up against the pad 3, the flywheel 5 is carried out of contact with the pinion 7 and the tightening action is completed solely by the momentum of the inertia member. The devices described may form parts of complete bottling-machines.
