Abstract
559,257. Surface carburetters. BODWAY, J., FAGARD, F. J., and CLAYTON, DEWANDRE CO., Ltd. Sept. 7, 1942, No. 12588. [Class 7 (iii)] [Also in Group XII] The freezing of moisture present in air or gas subsequently compressed is prevented by the addition of alcohol vapour to the air or gas flowing to the compressor, the liquid alcohol being vaporized by means controlling the percentage of alcohol, so that a higher degree of concentration is obtained with a lower air flow. A wick e mounted on a rod f extends from a receptacle a into a chamber b in which is a rotatable plug valve h. Air entering at c is directed to an outlet d either directly through a port i or into contact with an exposed portion n of the wick through a port k. By rotation of the valve, the proportion of air impregnated with alcohol vapour is varied, the maximum alcohol vapour being added when this port i is closed, and the port k fully open. A passage t is provided to equalize the pressures in the air inlet and alcohol receptacle.
