Abstract

559,232. Resilient supports ; vibration-dampers. UNITED AIRCRAFT CORPORATION. March 24, 1942, No. 3908. Convention date, March 21, 1941. [Class 108 (iii)] Frictional damping of shear movements is introduced in indiarubber or like supports for engines &c. the supports being also subjected to tension and compression. An engine casing 20 is supported from a ring 22 by a number of resilient supports each consisting of a casing 24, a core 44 and interposed rubber elements which may be stiffened by embedded rings or discs 48, the rubber being subjected to tension or compression in the direction of the axis of the stem 32 and in shear in all directions perpendicular to the axis, clearance 56 to allow shear being provided between the stem and the rubber and casing 24. To damp shear, a frictional surface 70 carried by the stem 32 is passed into engagement with an outside face of casing 24 by a dished disc spring 74 which when deformed until it is approximately flat exerts a practically constant pressure. Specification 543,123 is referred to.
